This web-case is to educate and introduce Peshawar to international levels. Waste-management is a rising issue in Peshawar and this web-case would help many understand why and what Peshawar is planning to do. The big picture is what is Peshawar’s plan and how will it do it? This web-case is to not only educate Pakistani people but to open ways for Peshawar to seek help internationally if required. This web-case is a gate-way for many countries to sneak peek into the sustainable development in Pakistan.

The web-case would show and argue on what/who is in favor and against this sustainable initiative. Being a third world country, Pakistan faces various challenges in moving towards such healthy and reliable initiatives. The policy is to focus mainly on waste management. The reason why waste management is of utmost importance is because due unpredictable weather conditions and illiteracy in some areas of the city is the reason the city is drowning in unsustainable lifestyle. Keeping the current political issues within the country in front there are very limited initiatives taken towards sustainable development within the city. Creating eco-friendly dumpsters and avoid burning waste are the main goals towards working on waste management. The other focus is the use of 3 R’s (Reduce, Reuse & Recycle)

We are dividing the waste into two categories, recyclable and absolute trash. If we succeed in bringing this plan into action things would get a lot easier for us. Our plan is to collect the recyclable waste and create trash bins from that waste by doing this it would be less costly and will be eco-friendly.

In some areas of city where waste is transported by private companies from transfer points to the disposal site out study found that scavengers could only get about 35% of the recyclables from the waste at transfer station.

Considering the above fact, it can be inferred that in case municipality introduces efficient waste transfer system in the city, the amount of recyclables reaching the disposal facility may increase by 30% of the current amount. In case house-to-house collection is introduced the municipality will be able to take hold of 90% of the recyclables in the waste stream being generated from a household.

The obstacles that are faced on pathway towards sustainable Peshawar are many. The major ones are finance, educating the citizens and approval.

Many powers within the government would not approve of such development. As they would twist things in order for the city to face issues in terms of finance. As the some areas of the city is occupied by people who are illiterate so educating them in terms of how to help the authorities towards making the city or that area of the city sustainable. The main obstacle is the approval of the plan, which does not get approved in the first go.

In March 2010 foreign investor under the name ‘Waste Management Pakistan Ltd’ was awarded the contract, getting 75 acres on long lease. The project, costing about euro 10 million, was scheduled for completion by February 2010 but meanwhile the government cancelled the contract. (DAWN NEWS)

I agree with you that the city of Peshawar is facing waste management issue. The reason behind this issue is tourism and the lower-class members of the city. In recent years Peshawar saw an increasing number of tourism and with that we saw a rise of land pollution, as the city did not have a proper disposal system the waste accumulated. The city was getting polluted with every passing day causing many issues for the city. To control the rise of waste in the city Environmental Protection Agency Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, has taken some great initiatives, such as providing the city with trash bins that would require them to divide their trash into two sections. Creation of areas where trash can be dumped and burned if needed to be.
